Manick Sorcar: An Introduction

Manick Sorcar’s simultaneous interest in science and art took place back stage where as a boy he did the lighting and art design for the world-famous magic shows of his father, Late P. C. Sorcar, the legendary magician.

As an artist, Mr. Sorcar has created a series of innovative shows that mix laser lighting with live action on stage. He is a two-time winner of the prestigious ILDA Artistic Award & the 2013 winner of the Special Achievement Award for Cultural Enlightenment from the International Laser Display Association for his work using laser display to celebrate India’s heritage.  He also established the Manick Sorcar Laser Animation Laboratory at Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India.

Earlier in his artistic career, his animated films, all based on children's stories from India, have been televised in India and the USA and have earned him the Gold Plaque at the Chicago International Film Festival as well as the Gold Medal at the International Film Festival of New York.

From the outset his endeavors were underlined by one goal: to bring the East to the West through his innovative creations. The unique show on Swami Vivekananda is an example of that effort where he uses the cutting-edge technology of laser for visual spectacles and to illuminate a soul.

In addition to his artistic work, Mr. Sorcar was an electrical engineer and the owner of Sorcar Engineering, which has done lighting design for the Denver International Airport, the Colorado Convention Center and several Japanese sports centers.
